Getting kids out on the snow or the trail is one of the best parts of the sport. The right gear keeps them safe, warm and having fun, so they want to keep riding.

The starter checklist

  1. Helmet. The most important piece. It must fit snugly with no rocking, and should be DOT-approved. Never buy a helmet to "grow into." Youth helmets →
  2. Goggles. Make sure they fit inside the helmet's eye port without gaps. For snow, a dual-pane lens helps prevent fogging. Goggles →
  3. Gloves or mitts. Kids' hands get cold fastest. Mitts are warmest for young riders. Youth gloves →
  4. Jacket and bibs, or a monosuit. Waterproof and insulated for snow; jersey and pants for off-road. Youth apparel →
  5. Base layer. Moisture-wicking, no cotton. Base layers →
  6. Boots. Warm, waterproof snow boots, or proper riding boots for off-road. Snow boots →
  7. Protection (off-road). Chest protector, knee guards and elbow guards. Youth protection →

Fit tips for growing kids

  • Jackets and bibs can have a little room to grow. Helmets and goggles should not.
  • Many youth bibs have adjustable straps and length features that buy an extra season.
  • Measure chest, waist and height and compare against the brand's size chart before ordering.
