Are golf carts street legal in Minnesota?
It depends on where you live. Under Minnesota Statute 169.045, a city, county or town can allow golf carts on roads it designates by passing an ordinance and issuing permits. If your town doesn't have a golf cart ordinance, golf carts aren't allowed on its public roads.
What Minnesota law says (if your town allows golf carts)
- You need a permit from your city, county or town. Permits can last up to 3 years and can be revoked.
- Sunrise to sunset only, unless your cart has original-equipment headlights, taillights and rear brake lights.
- No driving in bad weather or when you can't clearly see people and vehicles 500 feet away.
- A slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem is required on the cart.
- Stay on designated roads. You can cross streets and highways that intersect your designated route.
- Your town may also require proof of insurance and a physician's certificate saying you can drive safely.
How to get a golf cart permit
- Call your city hall (or county/township office) and ask if they have a golf cart ordinance.
- Get their permit application. Many towns post it on their website.
- Gather what they ask for, such as proof of insurance or a doctor's form.
- Make sure your cart has an SMV emblem plus any equipment your town requires.
This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Rules vary by town, so always check your local ordinance. Read the full law: Minnesota Statute 169.045.
